Tribes tired of waiting for recognition
JAMESTOWN, Va. – Jamestown leader Capt. John Smith once wrote that Pocahontas, daughter of the great chief Powhatan, was "the instrument to pursurve this colonie from death, famine, and utter confusion."

But as Virginia prepares to commemorate the 400th anniversary of North America's first permanent English settlement, Pocahontas' cultural heirs are still waiting for the descendants of the people she helped to reciprocate.

Tribal leaders are threatening to turn their participation in the upcoming Jamestown anniversary events into a protest if they don't get federal recognition by 2007. But the main sticking point to that recognition is casino gambling – something those tribes insist they don't even want.
